The Indian golden oriole was originally considered to be a subspecies of the Eurasian golden oriole. But considering recent information on morphology, plumage, and calls it is now established as a separate species altogether. The adult indian golden oriole can be told apart from the eurasian golden oriole by the black of the eye which extends beyond the eye in the former species. The former species also has a lighter shade of red in its iris and bill.

In Goa the species is migratory, with the birds appearing in november and staying on till the end of summer.
