The Grey jungle fowl is one of the ancestors of the domestic fowl along with the red jungle fowl. It is supposedly one responsible for the yellow pigment in the legs and other parts of the body of the domestic fowl.

This species shows strong sexual dimorphism with the male being the quintessential rooster with the big red comb and long flowing tail and the female being the sober patterned duller colored hen.

They feed on bamboo seeds, berries, insects, and termites. Though mostly seen on the ground they will fly into the trees to escape predators.
