At four centimeters in length the restricted demon (Notocrypta curvifascia) is a small species of butterfly.
The butterfly probably gets its name from the fact that it usually settles on low bushes and does not stray far from its home ground. Its activities are therefore ‘restricted’, and even though its flight is fast it usually stays close to the ground.
At the Cotigao butterfly park I took a series of shots which demonstrate the entire feeding process of this little butterfly. Click on the pics to load them larger
Since it has an extremely long proboscis in relation to the size of its body this butterfly can feed from a variety of flowers with a range of corolla tube lengths.
